Can social psychology explain the rise of right populist ideology in the West?
First came the bombastic anti Islamist politician Geert Wilders in the Netherlands, followed by a Marine Le Pen and her resurgent National Front in France. Then the British voted to return to protectionism by leaving the European Union. In the US, the rise of Trumpism has alarmed progressive cultures around the world.
In this lecture Dawlabani will address the causes for the rise of populist anger from a value-systems based perspective. He will present an overview of the theoretical framework pioneered by developmental psychologist Clare W. Graves. Attendees will learn about the eight levels of psychosocial existence uncovered by Graves and his successor Don E. Beck.
After a brief introduction to each level, its characteristics, organizational structure and motivational systems, we will focus on the two levels that are considered the emerging values of humanity, the Integrative 7th level and the Holistic 8th level of existence. Participants will understand the challenges facing Western societies today and how to design effective leadership from the 7th level of values. Based on his own work in evolutionary economics, Dawlabani will also give an overview of the capitalist system and its future through the Gravesian framework.
Signed copies of Dawlabani’s book MEMEnomics, the Next Generation Economic System will be available for purchase.
