Hi all,

In the news are the protests and rioting in Tibet and China’s heavy-handed response. I’m no history major and I know America has been guilty of some pretty offensive foreign policy moves but it seems to me China has us beat in that department when it comes to Tibet.

Tibetan Buddhism is one of the worlds most precious treasures and is deeply intertwined with Tibetan culture. China is systematically undermining and diluting the culture of Tibet and I for one am saddened and angry about it.

I got the following email today and I’m going down to Balboa Park on Saturday. Please consider going yourself to show your support for Tibet.

VIGIL FOR TIBET

Saturday, March 22, 2008 3 to 5 pm Balboa Park, corner of 6th and Laurel

Events: The vigil will include singing the Tibetan national anthem, chanting, brief presentations on the situation in Tibet, and action alerts.

A Colorful Gathering: Tibetans and their supporters in the San Diego community will be present in national dress, with Tibetan flags, prayer flags, and other symbols of Tibet?s unique national and cultural heritage.

Background: For almost 50 years, Tibetans have undergone untold suffering in their quest for human rights, religious rights, and self-determination. A massive influx of Chinese military is under way, and unknown numbers are wounded or dead or incarcerated and undergoing torture. We wish to stand in solidarity with them and provide attendees with information about public officials to contact to press for government action to end repression in Tibet.
